What is Age Diarrhea?

Published in Acute Gastroenteritis 2 mins read

Age diarrhea isn't a specific type of diarrhea. The term "AGE" refers to Acute Gastroenteritis, a common illness characterized by inflammation of the stomach and intestines. Diarrhea is a symptom of AGE, often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, fever, and abdominal pain. The diarrhea associated with AGE typically has a rapid onset lasting less than two weeks. Both vomiting and diarrhea are usually present, but one can occur alone.

Understanding Acute Gastroenteritis (AGE) and Diarrhea

  • AGE: Acute gastroenteritis (AGE) is an inflammation of the stomach and intestines. It's often caused by viral, bacterial, or parasitic infections.
  • Diarrhea as a Symptom: Diarrhea, a frequent symptom of AGE, is characterized by loose, watery stools. The severity and duration vary depending on the causative agent and the individual's health.
  • Age and Susceptibility: While people of all ages can experience AGE and associated diarrhea, it's particularly significant in young children. Diarrheal disease is a leading cause of death in children under five years old globally. This high mortality rate is linked to dehydration caused by severe diarrhea. Children are especially vulnerable due to their immature immune systems and smaller body size.

Examples of Viruses Causing AGE and Diarrhea:

  • Rotavirus: A major cause of severe diarrhea in young children. The CDC recommends vaccination to prevent rotavirus-related diarrhea.
  • Norovirus: Another common cause of AGE, affecting people of all ages, resulting in vomiting and diarrhea. It is a leading cause of foodborne illness.

AGE Diarrhea in Children:

  • Rotavirus and NSP4: Research has demonstrated that a specific protein (NSP4) from rotavirus can induce diarrhea, especially in young mice. This highlights the role of viral proteins in triggering the diarrheal symptom of AGE.
  • Treatment and Management: For children aged 6-11, the FDA-approved over-the-counter medication Loperamide HCl (IMODIUM®) is available in liquid form to manage diarrhea. For all ages, appropriate rehydration to compensate for fluid loss from diarrhea is crucial. Zinc supplementation is also recommended in managing diarrhea, particularly in children.
