How Do You Convert a Shape to Text in Illustrator?

Published in Adobe Illustrator 3 mins read

To convert a shape to text in Adobe Illustrator, you use the Type on a Path tool. This allows you to make text follow the outline of a shape. Here's how:

Steps:

  1. Create or Select a Shape: First, draw the shape you want the text to follow using any of Illustrator's shape tools (e.g., Rectangle Tool, Ellipse Tool, Pen Tool). Alternatively, select an existing shape.

  2. Select the Type on a Path Tool: Locate the Type Tool in the toolbar. Click and hold on the Type Tool icon to reveal a flyout menu. Choose the Type on a Path Tool. (It looks like a "T" on a curved line).

  3. Click on the Path: With the Type on a Path tool selected, click on the path (outline) of the shape. A cursor will appear on the shape's edge.

  4. Begin Typing: Start typing your desired text. The text will flow along the shape's path.

  5. Adjust as Needed:

    • Positioning: You can adjust the starting and ending points of the text along the path by dragging the small handles (usually "I-beam" shaped) that appear when you select the text with the Selection Tool (black arrow) after typing.
    • Text Attributes: Use the Character panel (Window > Type > Character) to modify the text's font, size, kerning, tracking, and other typographic attributes.
    • Path Attributes: You can change the shape's stroke and fill without affecting the text. However, radically altering the shape will change how the text flows.

Example:

Imagine you want text to follow a circular path.

  1. Use the Ellipse Tool to draw a circle.
  2. Select the Type on a Path Tool.
  3. Click on the circle's edge.
  4. Type "This text follows a circle." The text will now curve around the circle.

Important Considerations:

  • Open vs. Closed Paths: The Type on a Path tool works with both open and closed paths. An open path (like a line) will have a defined start and end point for the text. A closed path (like a circle or rectangle) will allow the text to flow continuously around the shape.
  • Baseline Shift: The Character panel allows you to adjust the baseline shift, moving the text above or below the path.
  • Orientation: You can flip the text to be inside or outside of a closed shape by going to Type > Type on a Path > Type on a Path Options. In the dialog box, changing the "Effect" to "Flip" reverses the direction of the text.

The Type on a Path tool gives you precise control over how text interacts with shapes, enabling a wide variety of creative designs in Illustrator.
