How do you insert in Adobe Illustrator?

Published in Adobe Illustrator 2 mins read

To insert a file into Adobe Illustrator, use the Place command.

Here's a breakdown of the process:

  1. Go to File > Place... This opens a dialog box allowing you to choose the file you want to insert.

  2. Select your file. Navigate to the location of the file you want to insert (e.g., another Illustrator file, a Photoshop file, a JPEG, etc.) and select it.

  3. Check "Show Import Options" (if applicable). This is particularly useful when placing layered files like Photoshop or PDFs. Checking this box will give you more control over how the file is imported.

  4. Click "Place".

    • If you did check "Show Import Options": You will be presented with a dialog box that allows you to specify which layers or pages to import, and how to handle them. Make your selections and click "OK".
    • If you did not check "Show Import Options": Illustrator will directly place the file into your document. You will then be able to click and drag to define the size and location of the inserted file. If you simply click, the file will be placed at its original size.

Important Considerations:

  • Linked vs. Embedded: When you place a file, you typically have the option to link it or embed it. A linked file keeps the Illustrator document smaller, as it only stores a reference to the original file. However, if the original file is moved or deleted, the link will be broken. An embedded file includes the entire file within the Illustrator document, making the file larger but ensuring that the inserted content is always available.

  • File Types: Illustrator can place a wide variety of file types, including Adobe Photoshop (.psd), Adobe PDF (.pdf), JPEG (.jpg), PNG (.png), and other vector formats like EPS (.eps) and SVG (.svg).

  • Working with Placed Images: Once the image is placed, you can transform it (scale, rotate, skew) using the Selection tool. It can also be masked, have effects applied to it, and be used as a part of more complex artwork.
