How to Keep Air Plants

Published in Air Plant Care 2 mins read

Air plants, also known as Tillandsia, are epiphytes, meaning they grow on other plants for support, not nutrients. Keeping them thriving involves understanding their basic needs.

Providing the Right Environment

Air plants need specific conditions to flourish. These include:

  • Light: Keep them in strong but diffused light. Direct sunlight can scorch their leaves. An east- or west-facing window is ideal, or a spot with bright, indirect light.

  • Air Circulation: Good air circulation is crucial. Avoid stagnant air, as this can lead to rot. A gentle breeze from a fan or an open window is beneficial.

  • Humidity: High humidity is key. Mist heavily whenever the surfaces appear dry, especially in drier climates. You can also group plants together to increase humidity around them. Consider using a pebble tray with water underneath the plant's pot (if potted) to increase humidity.

  • Temperature: Aim for a temperature of approximately 25°C (75°F). This is especially important during germination and for the first two years of the plant's life. Avoid extreme temperature fluctuations.

Watering Your Air Plant

Watering is crucial, but overwatering is a common mistake. Follow these guidelines:

  • Misting: Mist heavily whenever the surfaces of the young plants appear dry. For mature plants, you can soak them in water for 20-30 minutes once a week, allowing them to completely dry afterward before returning them to their location. Make sure to thoroughly rinse the plant to remove any standing water.

  • Water Quality: Use filtered or rainwater; tap water can contain minerals that might harm your air plant.

Additional Tips for Success

  • Potting (optional): While air plants don't need soil, some people prefer to pot them for aesthetic reasons. Use a decorative pot with drainage holes.
  • Fertilizing: Feed your air plant a diluted, water-soluble fertilizer once a month during the growing season (spring and summer).

By following these simple steps, you can ensure your air plants thrive and add a touch of unique beauty to your home. Remember that consistent care and attention to their needs will ensure your air plants flourish.
