Published in Apple Screen Recording 4 mins read

Screen recording on Apple devices is a straightforward process, whether you're using a Mac, iPhone, or iPad, allowing you to capture on-screen activity for tutorials, presentations, or sharing gameplay.

Screen Recording on Mac

On your Mac, the easiest way to record your screen is by using the built-in Screenshot toolbar, which also handles screen captures. For more advanced options or longer recordings, QuickTime Player is another excellent native tool.

Using the Screenshot Toolbar (macOS)

The Screenshot toolbar provides quick access to screen recording tools.

  1. Open the Screenshot Toolbar: Press Shift-Command-5 on your keyboard. This action will open the Screenshot toolbar at the bottom of your screen, displaying various tools for capturing or recording.
  2. Select Recording Option: In the toolbar, you'll see several icons.
    • Click the Record Entire Screen icon (a square with a solid circle in the bottom right corner).
    • Click the Record Selected Portion icon (a dashed square with a solid circle in the bottom right corner) if you only want to record a specific area. If you choose this, drag to select the desired area.
  3. Start Recording: Click the Record button located in the toolbar.
  4. Stop Recording: To stop, click the Stop Recording button in the menu bar (a circle with a square inside, usually next to the Control Center icon). Alternatively, press Command-Control-Esc (Escape).
  5. Save and Edit: A thumbnail of the recording will appear briefly in the bottom-right corner of your screen. Click it to trim, share, or save your recording. By default, recordings are saved to your Desktop.

Tips for Mac Screen Recording:

  • Microphone Audio: To record your voice or other audio from a microphone, click "Options" in the Screenshot toolbar before recording and select your desired microphone.
  • Save Location: You can change the default save location from "Options" in the Screenshot toolbar.
  • Timer: Set a timer (5 or 10 seconds) before recording starts, also found in "Options."

Using QuickTime Player (macOS)

QuickTime Player is a versatile media player that also excels at screen recording.

  1. Open QuickTime Player: Find it in your Applications folder or search for it using Spotlight (Command-Space).
  2. Start New Screen Recording: Go to File > New Screen Recording in the menu bar.
  3. Control Panel: A screen recording control panel will appear. It's similar to the Screenshot toolbar.
  4. Options: Click the arrow next to the record button to select a microphone, show mouse clicks, or choose a save location.
  5. Record: Click the record button.
    • Click anywhere on the screen to record the entire screen.
    • Drag to select a portion of the screen, then click "Start Recording" within the selected area.
  6. Stop Recording: Click the Stop Recording button in the menu bar or press Command-Control-Esc.
  7. Save: Once stopped, the recording will open in QuickTime Player. You can trim it (Edit > Trim) and then save it (File > Save) to your desired location.

Screen Recording on iPhone & iPad

iOS and iPadOS devices have a built-in screen recording feature accessible via Control Center.

  1. Add Screen Recording to Control Center (if not already there):
    • Go to Settings > Control Center.
    • Scroll down and tap the green + icon next to "Screen Recording" to add it to your Included Controls.
  2. Access Control Center:
    • On an iPhone with Face ID (or an iPad), swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen.
    • On an iPhone with a Home button, swipe up from the bottom of the screen.
  3. Start Recording: Tap the Screen Recording button (a solid circle within a larger circle). It will count down "3, 2, 1" before starting.
    • To record with microphone audio: Long-press or 3D Touch the Screen Recording button, then tap the Microphone Audio icon to turn it on before starting.
  4. Recording Indicator: A red status bar (iPhone) or red pill-shaped icon (iPhone with Face ID/iPad) will appear at the top of your screen, indicating recording is active.
  5. Stop Recording:
    • Tap the red status bar/pill at the top of your screen, then tap Stop.
    • Alternatively, open Control Center again and tap the Screen Recording button.
