You cannot definitively diagnose asthma at home, but you can monitor your lung function using a peak flow meter, especially if you already have a diagnosis.
Understanding the Peak Flow Meter
A peak flow meter is a handheld device that measures how quickly you can push air out of your lungs. It's an important tool in managing asthma, not diagnosing it initially.
How to Use a Peak Flow Meter:
- Make sure the device is set to zero or the lowest number.
- Stand up straight.
- Take a deep breath, filling your lungs completely.
- Place the mouthpiece of the peak flow meter in your mouth, ensuring a tight seal with your lips around it.
- Blow out as hard and as fast as you can into the device.
- Note the number the marker reaches. This is your peak flow reading.
- Repeat the test two more times and record your best of the three attempts.
- Do this every morning or as directed by your doctor.
Tracking Asthma at Home
While a peak flow meter cannot diagnose asthma, it's a great tool for tracking your condition at home after you've been diagnosed by a doctor.
- By regularly using the meter, you can identify patterns and know when to use your medication and/or when to seek medical attention.
- If you're diagnosed with asthma, your doctor will determine your "personal best" peak flow reading. It is important to follow your doctor’s instructions for when and how to check your peak flow.
Important Note:
If you suspect you have asthma, you should schedule an appointment with a medical doctor. Home testing can help in managing a diagnosed condition but cannot replace professional medical evaluation.
