How to Make a Cutting Plane Line in AutoCAD?

Published in AutoCAD Drafting 2 mins read

To create a cutting plane line in AutoCAD for generating section views, follow these steps:

  1. Initiate the Cutting Plane Command: Go to the "Home" tab, locate the "Drawing Views" group, and select "Cutting Plane."

  2. Select the Part View: Click on the specific part view in your drawing where you want to create the section.

  3. Draw the Cutting Plane Line: Define the cutting plane by clicking points in the drawing to specify its path. The cutting plane line indicates where the section view will be taken from. Remember that the cutting plane represents an imaginary cut through the object. You can draw a straight line, a stepped line, or any other shape to define the cut.

  4. Finalize the Cutting Plane: Once you've finished drawing the cutting plane line, click "Close Cutting Plane" on the ribbon. This signals the end of the cutting plane definition.

  5. Define Section View Direction: Click on the side of the cutting plane line that you want the section view to show. This indicates the direction from which you are "looking" at the sectioned part.

After completing these steps, AutoCAD will generate the section view based on the cutting plane you defined. The section view will show the internal features of the part as if it were cut along the cutting plane line. You can then adjust the placement and properties of the section view as needed.
