Birds ovulate through a precise biological process where a mature egg cell, known as the yolk, is released from the ovary and enters the reproductive tract.

Understanding Avian Ovulation

Ovulation in birds is defined as the process in which the yolk (ripe oocyte) is released from its follicle within the ovary. Once released, this mature yolk is then received into the oviduct through a funnel-like structure called the infundibulum. This critical step marks the beginning of the egg's journey through the oviduct, where it will undergo further development, including albumen (egg white) and shell formation, before being laid.

The entire process of the ovulation cycle, from one release to the next, can be quite extensive. In most ornamental birds, this ovulation cycle typically takes over 25 hours to complete.

The process of avian ovulation can be broken down into two main sequential steps:
