How to do baby oil massage?

Published in Baby Care Massage 3 mins read

Baby oil massage is a wonderful way to bond with your baby, promote relaxation, and potentially aid their sleep and development.

Performing a baby oil massage involves preparing the environment and the baby, applying gentle strokes to different parts of their body, and observing their cues throughout the process.

Preparing for the Massage

Before you begin, ensure you have everything ready:

  • Choose the right oil: Use a safe, natural baby oil or vegetable oil like almond, coconut, or olive oil. Avoid mineral oil-based products for infants with sensitive skin or allergies.
  • Set the mood: Choose a warm, quiet room. Lay your baby on a soft towel or blanket on a safe surface like the floor or a changing table.
  • Warm your hands: Rub your hands together to warm them before touching your baby.
  • Undress your baby: Remove your baby's clothes, leaving the diaper on if preferred.
  • Get permission: Start by gently stroking your baby to see if they are receptive. If they seem fussy or unhappy, it's best to wait until they are in a calmer mood.

Massage Techniques for Different Body Parts

Apply a small amount of oil to your hands and begin massaging gently. Always stroke towards the heart.

Legs and Feet

Start with the legs, as babies often enjoy this first.

  1. Leg Strokes: Hold one of your baby's ankles and gently stroke down their leg from thigh to foot, using a gentle squeezing motion as if milking.
  2. Foot Massage: Massage the bottom of the foot using your thumb, making small circles. Gently stroke the toes. As seen in the reference video snippet, using "All these Strokes" (referring to the foot strokes shown) "are very relaxing. And helps the baby relax off and sleep. Well. Once you're done with one of the foot you can do the same thing on the other." Focus on strokes that help the baby relax.
  3. Repeat on the other leg and foot.

Tummy

Massage the tummy gently in a clockwise direction to aid digestion. You can also use your fingertips to make small, gentle circles around the navel (avoiding the navel area itself if the umbilical stump hasn't healed).

Chest and Arms

  1. Chest Strokes: Place your hands flat on your baby's chest and stroke outwards towards the shoulders.
  2. Arm Strokes: Similar to the legs, gently stroke from shoulder to wrist, using a gentle squeezing motion.
  3. Hand Massage: Gently rub the palms and fingers, opening the hand.

Back

Turn your baby onto their tummy (if they are comfortable).

  1. Back Strokes: Using your fingertips, stroke gently up and down their back on either side of the spine.
  2. Circular Motions: Make small, gentle circular motions across their back.

General Tips for Baby Massage

  • Timing: Choose a time when your baby is alert but calm, usually between feeds. Avoid massaging immediately after a feed or when they are hungry or tired.
  • Duration: Keep the massage short, especially when starting, perhaps 10-15 minutes in total. You can gradually increase the time as your baby gets older and enjoys it more.
  • Read your baby's cues: Pay close attention to your baby's reactions. If they seem uncomfortable, restless, or cry, stop the massage.
  • Talk or sing: Maintain eye contact and talk or sing softly to your baby during the massage to enhance the bonding experience.

Baby massage is a beautiful practice focusing on connection and comfort. Enjoy this special time with your little one!
