How Do You Clean Baby Ear Wax?

Published in Baby Care 2 mins read

You can clean baby ear wax gently using a washcloth or cotton ball and warm water. Never insert anything into your baby's ear, including cotton swabs.

Why You Shouldn't Over-Clean

It's important to understand that earwax (cerumen) is beneficial for your baby. It protects the ear canal, provides lubrication, and has antibacterial properties. Generally, you don't need to actively remove earwax unless a doctor advises it.

How to Safely Clean the Outer Ear

  1. Gather Supplies: You'll need a soft washcloth or a cotton ball and some warm water. Ensure the water isn't too hot.
  2. Wet the Cloth/Cotton Ball: Dampen the washcloth or cotton ball with warm water.
  3. Wipe Gently: Gently wipe the outer ear area, including the folds and crevices. Avoid going inside the ear canal.
  4. Dry the Ear: Use a clean, dry portion of the washcloth or a fresh cotton ball to gently dry the outer ear.

When to See a Doctor

Consult a pediatrician if you notice any of the following:

  • Signs of infection (redness, swelling, pus)
  • Excessive earwax buildup blocking the ear canal
  • Your baby seems to have trouble hearing
  • Your baby is in pain or discomfort related to their ear

Important Note: Sticking objects into your baby's ear can push the earwax further in, potentially causing a blockage or even damaging the eardrum.
