Gently suction your baby's mouth using a bulb syringe to clear mucus. Avoid suctioning the back of the throat.
Using a Bulb Syringe
A bulb syringe is a safe and effective tool for removing mucus from your baby's mouth and nose. Follow these steps:
- Squeeze the bulb: Before inserting the tip, squeeze the air out of the bulb syringe away from your baby's face.
- Gently insert the tip: Carefully insert the tip of the syringe into one side of your baby's mouth, aiming for the pocket of the cheek, avoiding the back of the throat.
- Release the pressure: Slowly release your thumb from the bulb. Suction will draw the mucus into the syringe.
- Remove the syringe: Gently remove the syringe from your baby's mouth.
- Empty the mucus: Squeeze the bulb away from the baby's face to empty the collected mucus. Repeat as needed.
Important Considerations:
- Never suction the back of your baby's mouth. This can trigger a gag reflex or vomiting.
- Always supervise your baby during suctioning.
- Clean the bulb syringe thoroughly after each use. Sterilize regularly.
- If your baby has excessive mucus or difficulty breathing, contact your pediatrician immediately.
When to Suction
Suctioning your baby's mouth may be necessary if they:
- Have visible mucus in their mouth.
- Are struggling to breathe comfortably.
- Are spitting up frequently.
- Seem congested or uncomfortable.
Note: While some products advertise "mouth suction" for nasal congestion, this is not a recommended practice. Use a bulb syringe or nasal aspirator specifically designed for the nose for nasal suction.
