Why Do Baby Teeth Hurt?

Published in Baby Teeth 1 min read

Baby teeth hurt primarily because they are erupting, or pushing their way through the gums.

When a baby tooth emerges, it causes inflammation and pressure in the gum tissue. This process can result in:

  • Gum Inflammation: As the tooth pushes through, it irritates the gums, causing redness, swelling, and tenderness.
  • Pressure: The force of the tooth breaking through the gum can be painful.
  • Increased Sensitivity: The area around the erupting tooth becomes more sensitive to touch and temperature. This means chewing can be uncomfortable, and cold or hot foods might cause pain.

Essentially, the pain is a direct result of a tooth starting to emerge from beneath the gum line. This process is natural, but it is not without discomfort for the child.
