Gently transferring your baby from your arms to their bed is a common challenge for parents aiming to preserve sleep. A smooth transition can make a big difference.
The Transfer Technique
According to one method for transferring a baby to a bassinet, the key is to minimize movement and disturbance during the final moments of the transfer.
Here is a step-by-step approach based on this technique:
- Bend Down: When approaching the bassinet (or bed), bend as much as you can. The goal is to lower yourself closer to the baby's sleeping surface rather than just lowering the baby from a standing position.
- Follow with Your Body: Continue to follow the baby downwards with your body, getting as close as you can to the bed until the very last second before they are placed down. This controlled descent helps maintain stability.
- Place Your Hands: Once the baby is close to the surface, place your hands on them to provide support and contact.
- Place one hand on the chest.
- Place one hand on the diaper area.
- Slowly Remove Hands: You then slowly remove one hand at a time. This gradual release of support can help the baby remain settled.
This method emphasizes getting physically low and maintaining contact and support right up until the baby is fully on the sleeping surface, followed by a gentle, phased release of your hands.
