Grendel's Reign of Terror
For twelve years, the monstrous Grendel, a descendant of Cain, terrorized the Danes by attacking Heorot, devouring warriors, and leaving the hall deserted. Beowulf travels to Denmark specifically to defeat this creature, succeeding in a fierce, unarmed battle by ripping off Grendel's arm. Grendel then retreats to his lair to die.
The Avenging Monster: Grendel's Mother
Following Grendel's death, a new danger arises. Beowulf learns that the kingdom was afflicted by not just one, but two monstrous beings: Grendel and his mother. Grendel's Mother, driven by grief and a thirst for vengeance for her son's demise, launches a brutal retaliatory attack on Heorot.
