The centurion said to Jesus: "Lord, my servant lies at home paralyzed and in terrible suffering." And then, in response to Jesus' offer to come, he added: "Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof."
The Centurion's Words to Jesus
When Jesus entered Capernaum, a centurion approached him, seeking help for his ailing servant. The centurion's words conveyed both his immediate concern and, later, his profound humility and faith.
A Plea for Healing
His initial statement to Jesus was a direct appeal for help, revealing the dire condition of his servant:
- "Lord, my servant lies at home paralyzed and in terrible suffering."
This opening demonstrated his faith in Jesus' ability to heal, as well as his deep care for his servant.
A Statement of Humility and Faith
Upon hearing Jesus' response—"I will go and heal him"—the centurion's reply was one of remarkable humility, suggesting he understood Jesus' authority extended beyond physical presence:
- "Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof."
This statement underscored his belief that Jesus' power did not require Him to physically enter the centurion's home; a word from Jesus would suffice.
