What is a CMG test?

Published in Bladder Function Testing 2 mins read

A CMG test, or cystometrogram, is a key part of urodynamic testing (UDS) that measures how well the bladder functions. It helps doctors diagnose various bladder-related problems.

Understanding the CMG Test

A cystometrogram, often done with a pressure flow study, focuses on assessing bladder function. This test helps identify issues related to:

  • Urine control problems, such as incontinence
  • Difficulty emptying the bladder
  • Overactive bladder
  • Obstructions in the urinary tract
  • Frequent urinary tract infections

Why is a CMG Test Performed?

A CMG test is performed to diagnose the cause of urinary problems. Understanding how the bladder functions allows healthcare providers to determine the most effective treatment options.

What does CMG test involve?

CMG testing usually involves filling the bladder with water or saline through a catheter while measuring the pressure inside the bladder. This helps determine how well the bladder stores and empties urine.

Types of Urodynamic Tests

A CMG is part of a larger set of tests called urodynamic studies (UDS), which may include:

  • Uroflowmetry: Measures the rate and amount of urine flow.
  • Postvoid Residual Measurement: Measures the amount of urine left in the bladder after urination.
  • Cystometry: Measures bladder pressure during filling and emptying (the CMG test).
  • Electromyography (EMG): Measures electrical activity of the muscles and nerves in the bladder and urethra.
  • Video Urodynamics: Uses imaging (X-ray or ultrasound) to visualize the bladder and urethra during urination.
