Is it OK to Cover a Blister?

Published in Blister Care 1 min read

Yes, it's generally okay to cover a blister, and sometimes even recommended, depending on whether it's intact or has popped.

Covering an Intact Blister

The goal with an unpopped blister is to protect it and prevent it from bursting prematurely.

  • Leave it uncovered (often preferred): If the blister isn't in an area prone to friction or pressure, leaving it uncovered can allow it to heal naturally.
  • Cover loosely with a bandage: If the blister is in a high-friction area, a loose bandage can offer protection.
  • Use a donut-shaped moleskin: For blisters on pressure points, like the bottom of the foot, a donut-shaped moleskin pad can redistribute pressure and prevent further irritation. The blister sits in the hole of the donut.

What to Avoid

  • Popping the blister yourself (generally): The skin over the blister protects it from infection. If possible, it's best to let it heal on its own.

When to Seek Medical Attention

If the blister shows signs of infection (increased pain, redness, pus), consult a healthcare professional. Diabetics or individuals with circulatory problems should also seek medical advice for blisters.
