What causes high platelets?

Published in Blood Disorders 1 min read

A high platelet count, also known as thrombocytosis, can be caused by various factors.

Here are some common causes:

  • Reactive Thrombocytosis: This is the most frequent cause and occurs when the body "reacts" to an underlying condition, like inflammation, infection, or iron deficiency. It's often temporary and resolves once the underlying issue is addressed.
  • Splenectomy: Removing the spleen, which normally stores platelets, can lead to a higher platelet count.
  • Inflammatory Conditions: Conditions like connective tissue disorders, inflammatory bowel disease, and tuberculosis can elevate your platelet count.
  • Cancer: Certain types of cancer can cause an increase in platelet production.
  • Iron Deficiency Anemia: A deficiency in iron can lead to increased platelet production.
  • Infections: Infections, such as tuberculosis, can trigger a rise in platelet levels.
  • Thrombocythemia: This is a rare blood disorder where the bone marrow produces too many platelets, leading to an elevated count.

It's important to remember that a high platelet count isn't always a cause for concern, especially if it's due to reactive thrombocytosis. However, it's crucial to consult a healthcare professional to determine the underlying cause and receive appropriate treatment if necessary.
