How to Watch Ads on Brave?

Published in Brave Rewards 3 mins read

Watching ads on Brave involves enabling the Brave Rewards feature, which allows you to receive privacy-preserving advertisements and earn Basic Attention Tokens (BAT). Unlike traditional ad models, Brave's approach gives you control over your ad experience and rewards you for your attention.

Understanding Brave Ads

Brave's ad system is designed to be user-centric. Instead of intrusive pop-ups or tracking, Brave Ads are delivered directly to your device and respect your privacy. When you opt-in to Brave Rewards, you become eligible to receive these ads and earn a portion of the revenue they generate.

Where Brave Ads Appear

Currently, Brave Ads appear in three distinct ways within the browser interface:

  • Push Notifications: These are subtle, system-level notifications that appear outside the browser window. You receive these based on your chosen frequency settings without interrupting your browsing experience.
  • Sponsored Images on New Tab Page: When you open a new tab, you may see high-quality, privacy-preserving background images that are sponsored by advertisers. These are often visually appealing and blend seamlessly into the browsing experience.
  • Sponsored Cards in Brave News Feed: Within the Brave News feed (accessible from the New Tab page), you might encounter sponsored articles or content integrated naturally into the news stream.

Enabling Brave Ads (Push Notifications)

To start receiving Brave Ads, particularly the push notifications which are opt-in, you need to enable Brave Rewards in your browser settings:

  1. Open Brave Browser: Launch your Brave browser on your desktop or mobile device.
  2. Access Brave Rewards Settings:
    • Click on the Brave Rewards icon (often a small triangle or BAT logo) in the address bar.
    • Alternatively, go to Settings (usually via the three-line menu or gear icon) and navigate to Brave Rewards.
  3. Turn On Brave Rewards: Ensure the "Brave Rewards" toggle is switched on.
  4. Enable Brave Ads: Within the Brave Rewards settings, look for the "Ads" section. Make sure the toggle for "Brave Ads" is enabled.
  5. Adjust Ad Frequency: For push notifications, you can set the frequency of ads you wish to see per hour. You can choose from various options, from 1 to 10 ads per hour, or even set it to 0 if you wish to temporarily pause them without disabling Brave Rewards entirely.

Interacting with Brave Ads

  • Push Notifications: Simply viewing or dismissing the notification counts as engagement. You are not required to click on them to earn rewards, although clicking will take you to the advertiser's content if you're interested.
  • Sponsored Images/Cards: These are displayed as part of your browsing experience (new tab page, Brave News feed). You "watch" them by simply seeing them as you use the browser features where they appear.

By enabling Brave Ads, you're participating in a privacy-respecting advertising ecosystem that rewards you for your attention while helping support content creators and the Brave platform.
