What does VENCLEXTA do?

Published in Cancer Treatment 1 min read

VENCLEXTA is a prescription medicine primarily used to treat certain blood cancers in adults. Specifically, it is used:

  • To treat adults with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) or small lymphocytic lymphoma (SLL).
  • In combination with azacitidine, decitabine, or low-dose cytarabine, to treat adults with newly diagnosed acute myeloid leukemia (AML) who are 75 years of age or older, or who have certain other health conditions.

Essentially, VENCLEXTA works by helping to restore the process of programmed cell death (apoptosis) in cancerous cells, causing them to die. This is achieved by inhibiting a protein called BCL-2, which is often overexpressed in these cancer cells, allowing them to survive for longer than they should.
