How to Tint Headlights with Spray?

Published in Car Modification 3 mins read

Tinting headlights with spray requires careful preparation and application. Here's a step-by-step guide:

1. Remove the Headlight Assembly

First, safely dismount the headlight assembly from your vehicle. This allows for easier and more even application of the tint spray. Refer to your vehicle's repair manual for specific instructions on removing the headlights.

2. Clean the Headlight Lens

Thoroughly clean the headlight lens using soap and water. Remove any dirt, grime, or residue. Follow up with a degreaser or isopropyl alcohol to ensure a perfectly clean surface for optimal tint adhesion. Let the lens dry completely.

3. Read the Aerosol Tint Instructions

Carefully read and understand the instructions that came with your chosen aerosol tint. Different products may have varying application techniques and drying times. Following the manufacturer’s guidelines is crucial for achieving the desired result and avoiding mistakes.

4. Prepare the Headlight Lenses and Work Area

Mask off any areas of the headlight assembly you don't want to tint (e.g., the housing). Use painter's tape and newspaper or masking paper. Also, prepare your work area. Choose a well-ventilated space, preferably outdoors or in a garage with open doors and fans. This prevents the build-up of harmful fumes. Protect the surrounding area with drop cloths or newspapers.

5. Apply the Tint in Thin Coats

Spray one lens at a time. Begin with a very thin, even coat of tint. Hold the can approximately 8-12 inches away from the lens and use smooth, overlapping strokes. Allow the first coat to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions (usually a few minutes). Apply subsequent thin coats until you achieve the desired level of tint. Avoid applying thick coats, as this can lead to runs, drips, and an uneven finish. Two to three light coats are generally recommended.

6. Allow for Drying and Curing

Let the tinted headlights dry and cure completely, following the manufacturer's instructions. This may take several hours or even overnight. Avoid touching the lenses during this time to prevent fingerprints or smudges.

7. Reinstall the Headlight Assembly

Once the tint is completely dry and cured, carefully reinstall the headlight assembly back onto your vehicle. Ensure all connections are secure.

Important Considerations:

  • Legality: Check your local laws and regulations regarding headlight tinting. Some jurisdictions have restrictions on the darkness of the tint allowed.
  • Visibility: Tinting your headlights reduces the amount of light emitted, potentially impacting visibility, especially at night.
  • UV Protection: Consider using a tint with UV protection to help prevent the headlights from yellowing or fading over time.
  • Professional Installation: If you are not comfortable with DIY projects or concerned about achieving a professional finish, consider having your headlights tinted by a professional auto body shop.
