How to Turn Windshield Wipers On?

Published in Car Wipers 2 mins read

On most vehicles, you turn on the windshield wipers using a lever or stalk located on the steering column, typically on the right side.

Locating the Windshield Wiper Control

  • Steering Column Stalk: The primary control for your windshield wipers is almost always a stalk extending from the steering column. Look on the right side first.
  • Iconography: The stalk usually features icons representing windshield wipers and sometimes rain. These symbols visually indicate the control's purpose.

Operating the Windshield Wipers

  • Pulling Down or Up: Moving the lever down or up (away or toward you, depending on the vehicle) generally activates the wipers at different speeds. One position will be low speed, another high speed, and potentially intermittent settings.
  • Intermittent Setting: Many vehicles have an intermittent setting that wipes the windshield periodically. This is ideal for light rain or mist. The intermittent setting may be controlled by a rotating collar on the stalk, allowing you to adjust the frequency of the wipes.
  • One-Time Wipe: Pulling the lever inward (towards you) typically activates a single wipe of the windshield. This is useful for quickly clearing a splash or a light obstruction.
  • Rear Wiper (If Equipped): Some vehicles, especially SUVs and hatchbacks, have a rear windshield wiper. The control for the rear wiper is often integrated into the same stalk, usually activated by twisting the end of the stalk or pushing a button on it.

Using Windshield Washer Fluid

  • Pull and Hold: To spray windshield washer fluid, pull the lever towards you and hold it. This will activate the washer fluid pump and spray fluid onto the windshield while the wipers operate.

Example Scenarios:

  • Light Rain: Use the intermittent setting.
  • Moderate Rain: Use the low-speed setting.
  • Heavy Rain: Use the high-speed setting.
  • Splattered Bug: Pull the lever towards you to spray washer fluid and wipe the windshield.

Note:

Always consult your vehicle's owner's manual for specific instructions on operating the windshield wipers, as controls can vary slightly between makes and models.
