What is a Myxoma?

Published in Cardiology 1 min read

A myxoma is a rare, primary heart tumor, meaning it originates within the heart itself.

While most heart tumors start in other parts of the body and spread to the heart, myxomas are primary cardiac tumors, which are uncommon. Approximately 75% of myxomas are found in the left atrium, one of the heart's chambers.

Here's a breakdown:

  • Primary Cardiac Tumor: The tumor originates in the heart.
  • Rare: Myxomas are not commonly found.
  • Location: Most often located in the left atrium.

Myxomas can cause various symptoms depending on their size and location. These symptoms can mimic those of other heart conditions.
