What is the Normal AV Area?

Published in Cardiology 1 min read

The normal aortic valve (AV) area in adults is approximately 3.0 to 4.0 cm2.

This measurement is a critical indicator of aortic valve function. The aortic valve controls blood flow from the heart's left ventricle into the aorta, the body's main artery. A normal valve area ensures efficient blood flow to the rest of the body.

A smaller valve area suggests aortic stenosis, a condition where the valve narrows, restricting blood flow and forcing the heart to work harder. Aortic stenosis is typically classified by valve area:

  • Normal: 3.0 - 4.0 cm2
  • Mild Stenosis: 1.5 - 3.0 cm2
  • Moderate Stenosis: 1.0 - 1.5 cm2
  • Severe Stenosis: < 1.0 cm2

The aortic valve area is typically assessed using echocardiography. This non-invasive imaging technique uses sound waves to create detailed pictures of the heart and its valves. Other diagnostic tests like cardiac catheterization may also be used in certain circumstances.
