What is a Qualitative Map?

Published in Cartography 2 mins read

A qualitative map is a map that uses symbols to show the distribution of different categories or types of things within a geographical area. It focuses on representing what exists in a location, rather than how much of it exists. It showcases the presence or absence of a particular characteristic or feature.

Understanding Qualitative Data on Maps

Unlike quantitative maps that depict numerical data (like population density or rainfall amounts), qualitative maps use symbols, colors, or patterns to represent categories. The data displayed is about the quality of something, hence the name.

Key Characteristics of Qualitative Maps

  • Focus on Categories: They represent data grouped into distinct categories (e.g., types of vegetation, land use classifications, soil types).
  • Symbolic Representation: Uses different symbols, colors, or patterns to distinguish between categories. For example, different colors might represent different political parties in an election map.
  • No Numerical Values (Usually): They don't typically show quantities or magnitudes. The presence or absence of a characteristic is the key information.
  • Examples:
    • Land Use Maps: Showing areas designated for residential, commercial, industrial, or agricultural use.
    • Vegetation Maps: Displaying the distribution of different types of plant life (forest, grassland, desert).
    • Geological Maps: Indicating different rock types and geological formations.
    • Political Maps: Illustrating the boundaries of countries, states, or provinces.

Qualitative vs. Quantitative Maps: A Comparison

Feature Qualitative Map Quantitative Map
Data Type Categorical; presence or absence of a characteristic Numerical; showing amounts, values, or magnitudes
Representation Symbols, colors, patterns to represent categories Isolines, shaded areas, graduated symbols
Example Map of different forest types in a region Map showing population density per square kilometer

In summary, a qualitative map is a powerful tool for visualizing the spatial distribution of categorical data, offering insights into the diverse characteristics of a geographic area without necessarily quantifying those characteristics.
