What age do kids start coloring?

Published in Child Development 1 min read

Kids typically start coloring between the ages of 3 and 4.

While children may scribble and experiment with crayons earlier, it's usually around 3-4 years old that they begin to develop the fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination necessary to color with more intention.

Coloring Milestones by Age:

Age Milestone
Around 3-4 Years * Coloring within lines: Can color roughly within the lines of simple shapes.
* Tracing: Begin tracing thick horizontal lines without going off the line much.

These milestones are approximate, and every child develops at their own pace.
