What causes labour to start?

Published in Childbirth 1 min read

Labour is initiated by a protein released from the baby when the baby's organs are fully mature and the baby is ready for life outside the uterus.

When a baby is ready to be born, several complex processes are involved:

  • Fetal Development: As the baby develops, particularly in the final weeks, key organs such as the lungs and the brain undergo significant maturation. The brain grows dramatically.
  • Protein Release: Once these organs are adequately developed, the baby releases a small amount of a specific protein.
  • Initiation of Labor: This protein acts as a signal to the mother's body, triggering the cascade of events that lead to labour.
