How to Clean Sink Drain Covers?

Published in Cleaning 2 mins read

Cleaning sink drain covers is simple and can be done effectively with household items.

Here's a straightforward method for cleaning sink drain covers:

  1. Remove the Drain Cover: Carefully lift the drain cover from the sink drain. This might be a basket strainer or a simple metal cover.

  2. Rinse Under Hot Water: Rinse the drain cover thoroughly under hot, running water to remove loose debris.

  3. Apply Cleaning Solution:

    • Option 1 (Dish Soap): Apply a few drops of dish soap to the drain cover.
    • Option 2 (Baking Soda & Vinegar): Sprinkle baking soda onto the drain cover, followed by a small amount of vinegar. Let it fizz for a few minutes.
    • Option 3 (Dishwasher Cleaning Powder): Sprinkle a level teaspoon of dishwasher cleaning powder onto the closed drain cup that holds the basket insert. Pour water over it.
  4. Scrub Thoroughly: Use a brush (an old toothbrush works well) to scrub all surfaces of the drain cover, paying attention to crevices and hard-to-reach areas. If using the dishwasher cleaning powder, allow it to work for approximately 30 seconds before scrubbing. Scrub for another 30 seconds.

  5. Rinse Again: Rinse the drain cover thoroughly under hot water to remove all traces of the cleaning solution.

  6. Dry and Replace: Dry the drain cover completely with a clean cloth before placing it back into the sink drain.

By following these steps, you can keep your sink drain covers clean and free of buildup, which helps maintain good drainage and prevents unpleasant odors.
