Are clouds H2O?

Published in Cloud Physics 1 min read

While clouds do contain water, they are not entirely made of H2O. They are actually composed of tiny water droplets or ice crystals suspended in the air. The water vapor present in the air, which is invisible, condenses into these droplets or crystals when the air becomes saturated with water vapor.

Here's a breakdown:

  • Clouds are not made of water vapor. Water vapor is a gas and is invisible to the naked eye.
  • Clouds are made of liquid water droplets or ice crystals. These droplets or crystals are what we see as clouds.
  • The air around us contains invisible water vapor. This vapor condenses into liquid or ice form when the air cools and can no longer hold it.

Therefore, clouds are not simply H2O, but rather a mixture of water droplets or ice crystals, along with other components like dust particles that act as condensation nuclei.
