Methods for Reducing Concrete pH

According to information from February 19, 2009, there are two primary approaches to help lower the pH of concrete flooring:

  1. Using a Light Acid Wash: Applying a light acid wash is a direct method you can consider. This process involves using a mild acid solution to treat the concrete surface. The acid reacts with alkaline components in the concrete, helping to neutralize them and reduce the overall pH level.
  2. Allowing Natural Carbonation: If an acid wash isn't feasible, another option is to simply wait. Over time, the concrete undergoes a natural process called carbonation. Carbonation occurs when carbon dioxide from the air penetrates the concrete and reacts with calcium hydroxide, forming calcium carbonate. This reaction gradually lowers the pH levels in the concrete, often to acceptable levels, though this process can take several months.

These methods provide ways to address high pH in concrete, offering both a more immediate solution (acid wash) and a time-dependent natural process (carbonation).
