- Allowing Natural Carbonation: If an acid wash isn't feasible, another option is to simply wait. Over time, the concrete undergoes a natural process called carbonation. Carbonation occurs when carbon dioxide from the air penetrates the concrete and reacts with calcium hydroxide, forming calcium carbonate. This reaction gradually lowers the pH levels in the concrete, often to acceptable levels, though this process can take several months.
