BPA-free indicates products that do not contain the toxic plasticizer bisphenol A (BPA).
BPA is an industrial chemical that has been used to make certain plastics and resins since the 1950s. It's often found in polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins. Polycarbonate plastics are often used in containers that store food and beverages, such as water bottles and baby bottles. Epoxy resins are used to coat the inside of metal products, such as food cans, bottle tops, and water supply lines.
Why is BPA a Concern?
BPA can leach into food and beverages from containers made with BPA. Exposure to BPA is a concern because of possible health effects on the brain and prostate gland of fetuses, infants, and children. It can also affect children's behavior. Research also suggests a possible link between BPA and increased blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
How to Identify BPA-Free Products
Look for products labeled "BPA-free." This label indicates that the product was manufactured without BPA. Many manufacturers have voluntarily removed BPA from their products, and the availability of BPA-free alternatives has increased.
Examples of BPA-Free Products
- Water bottles: Many reusable water bottles are now made from BPA-free materials like stainless steel, glass, or BPA-free plastic.
- Baby bottles and sippy cups: Most baby bottles and sippy cups are now made without BPA.
- Food containers: Look for food storage containers made from BPA-free plastic, glass, or stainless steel.
- Canned goods: While linings of some cans still contain BPA, an increasing number of companies are using BPA-free alternatives.
By choosing BPA-free products, you can reduce your exposure to this potentially harmful chemical.
