What is Normal Overbite?

Published in Dentistry 2 mins read

A normal overbite is where the upper front teeth vertically overlap the lower front teeth, which is essential for proper chewing, speaking, and overall facial aesthetics.

Understanding Normal Overbite

A healthy overbite typically falls within a specific range, both vertically and horizontally:

  • Vertical Overlap: This refers to how much the upper front teeth cover the lower front teeth. A normal vertical overlap is generally considered to be between 20% and 40%. This means that the upper teeth cover roughly one-fifth to two-fifths of the lower teeth.

  • Horizontal Overlap (Overjet): This measures how far the upper front teeth protrude horizontally past the lower front teeth. A normal overjet is usually up to 3mm.

Why is Normal Overbite Important?

A proper overbite is crucial for several reasons:

  • Chewing Efficiency: Correct alignment allows for efficient and comfortable biting and chewing.
  • Speech Clarity: The position of the teeth influences speech patterns, and a normal overbite aids in clear articulation.
  • Facial Aesthetics: A balanced overbite contributes to a harmonious and pleasing facial profile.
  • Protection of Lower Teeth: The upper teeth provide some protection to the lower teeth during biting and chewing.

Problems Associated with Abnormal Overbite

  • Deep Overbite: When the upper teeth excessively cover the lower teeth, it can lead to gum problems, wear on the lower teeth, and jaw joint issues (TMJ).
  • Open Bite: When the front teeth do not overlap at all, it can cause difficulty biting into foods and speech problems.

Treatment Options

If an overbite is outside the normal range, orthodontic treatment (braces or clear aligners) can correct the alignment and improve oral health and function.
