How Do You Drain a Drip Line?

Published in Drip Line Drainage 1 min read

Draining a drip line protects it from freeze damage during winter. This is accomplished primarily through three methods: gravity, automatic valves, or compressed air.

Methods for Draining a Drip Irrigation System

  • Gravity Drainage: The simplest method involves opening a drain valve at the lowest point of your drip irrigation system. Gravity will then naturally pull the water out of the lines. This requires a properly installed drain valve.

  • Automatic Drain Valves: For added convenience, consider installing automatic drain valves. These valves automatically open when the water pressure drops, allowing the system to drain efficiently. They are particularly useful for larger systems or those in areas with frequent freeze-thaw cycles.

  • Compressed Air: For thorough draining, especially in longer or more complex systems, you can use compressed air. This forces the remaining water out of the lines. Caution: Be sure to use appropriate air pressure to avoid damaging the system.

Important Considerations

Before draining, familiarize yourself with your specific drip irrigation system's design and components to ensure proper drainage procedures. Improper drainage can lead to burst pipes and system failure.
