What Does E Point Mean?

Published in Driver Ergonomics 1 min read

E points are specific reference points used to define the mid-point between a driver's left and right eye under particular conditions of head rotation.

Understanding E Points

E points are precise locations that represent the central point between a driver's eyes. This measurement is not static; it is determined when the driver's head is rotated around a designated P Point. The P Point serves as a crucial pivot for this rotation.

The specific conditions under which E points are defined include the driver looking in particular directions:

  • Forward: When the driver is looking straight ahead.
  • 60 Degrees to the Nearside: When the driver's head is turned 60 degrees towards the side closest to the center of the vehicle (often the passenger side in left-hand drive cars, or driver's side in right-hand drive cars).
  • 60 Degrees to the Offside: When the driver's head is turned 60 degrees towards the side furthest from the center of the vehicle.

These points are crucial in various fields, especially in automotive design and safety regulations, to ensure proper visibility, ergonomics, and the placement of controls and mirrors relative to the driver's eye line.
