What does the malleus do?

Published in Ear Anatomy and Function 1 min read

The malleus, one of the three ossicles in the middle ear, transmits sound from the tympanic membrane (eardrum) to the inner ear.

Here's a breakdown of the malleus's function:

  • Sound Reception: The malleus receives vibrations directly from the tympanic membrane (eardrum).
  • Vibration Transmission: It then transmits these vibrations to the incus, the next bone in the ossicular chain.

Essentially, the malleus acts as a crucial link in the chain of tiny bones responsible for conducting sound from the outer ear to the inner ear, enabling us to hear. Without the malleus, sound vibrations wouldn't be efficiently transferred, leading to hearing impairment.
