The stapes, also known as the stirrup, is the smallest bone in the human body. It is located in the middle ear and is one of three tiny bones called ossicles, which transmit sound vibrations from the eardrum to the inner ear. The stapes is only about 3 millimeters long and weighs less than 3 milligrams.
Damage to the stapes can cause partial or complete hearing loss.
