The first element to be chemically discovered was phosphorus, found by Hennig Brandt.

The Discovery of Phosphorus

In the year 1669, Hennig Brandt, a German alchemist, is credited with the chemical discovery of phosphorus. This marks a significant moment in scientific history, as it was the first time someone isolated and identified a new element through a deliberate experiment.

  • Brandt was attempting to create the Philosopher's Stone, a mythical substance believed to turn base metals into gold.
  • He experimented with urine, hoping to extract some essence that would lead to the stone's creation.
  • Through a complex process of boiling down urine, he obtained a white, waxy substance that glowed in the dark. This substance was phosphorus.

While other elements may have been known in antiquity (like gold, silver, copper, etc.), they were not discovered in the scientific sense. Their existence was simply observed. Brandt's isolation of phosphorus was the first instance of chemically isolating a new element.
