How Do You Know If a Loved One Is Passing?

Published in End-of-Life Care 2 mins read

Knowing when a loved one is nearing the end of their life can be a deeply emotional and challenging experience. While every individual's experience is unique, several signs can indicate that death may be imminent.

Here are some of the common signs that a loved one is passing:

  • Changes in Skin Appearance:
    • Mottled and blotchy skin, particularly on the hands, feet, and knees, is a common sign. This is due to reduced blood circulation.
  • Decreased Blood Pressure:
    • Blood pressure often decreases significantly in the days or hours leading up to death.
  • Difficulty Swallowing:
    • Loss of appetite and difficulty or inability to swallow food and liquids are frequent occurrences. This is because the body is shutting down and no longer needs nourishment.
  • Changes in Urination and Bowel Movements:
    • Decreased urine output and potential loss of bladder and bowel control can occur as the body's systems begin to fail.
  • Restlessness and Confusion:
    • The person may exhibit restlessness, agitation, or confusion. This can be due to changes in brain function.
  • Breathing Changes:
    • Breathing patterns often change, becoming shallow, rapid, or irregular. Cheyne-Stokes respiration (periods of deep breathing followed by periods of apnea) is also common.
  • Congested Lungs:
    • Fluid buildup in the lungs can cause a gurgling or rattling sound, sometimes referred to as a "death rattle."

It's important to remember that the presence of one or more of these signs does not definitively mean that death is imminent. Other factors, such as underlying medical conditions, can influence these symptoms. It is always best to consult with a healthcare professional for an accurate assessment and guidance. Support from hospice or palliative care services can provide comfort and care for both the person passing and their loved ones during this difficult time.
