How many bones are in the eye?

Published in Eye Anatomy 1 min read

There are no bones in the eye itself. The eye is a delicate organ made up of soft tissues, including the cornea, iris, lens, and retina. The bones surrounding the eye, called the orbital bones, protect and support it.

The eye socket, or orbit, is formed by seven bones:

  • Frontal bone
  • Sphenoid bone
  • Zygomatic bone
  • Maxillary bone
  • Lacrimal bone
  • Ethmoid bone
  • Palatine bone

These bones provide a protective framework for the eye, preventing damage from external forces.
