What is Sunken Eye Syndrome?

Published in Eye Conditions 1 min read

Sunken eye syndrome, often referred to simply as sunken eyes or enophthalmos, is a condition where the eyes appear to be recessed or sunken back into the eye sockets.

Appearance of Sunken Eyes

This appearance is typically characterized by:

  • Darker skin directly under your lower eyelids, creating a shadow effect.
  • The overall look of the eyes appearing sunken back into the eye orbit.

Common Causes of Sunken Eye Syndrome

Several factors can contribute to the development of sunken eyes. These include:

  • Aging: As individuals age, changes in facial fat pads and bone structure can lead to the eyes appearing more sunken.
  • Trauma: An injury or physical impact to the area around the eye can result in the eyes taking on a sunken appearance.
  • Lack of Sleep: Insufficient or poor-quality sleep is a common temporary cause that can make eyes look more recessed and tired.

Does Sunken Eye Syndrome Always Require Treatment?

It is important to understand that sunken eyes do not always require treatment. In many cases, especially when the cause is temporary (like lack of sleep), the condition may resolve on its own, or it might be a natural part of the aging process that doesn't necessitate medical intervention.
