How to Clear Pink Eye?

Published in Eye Health 1 min read

Pink eye, or conjunctivitis, is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the clear membrane that covers the white part of your eye. It can be caused by bacteria, viruses, or allergies.

Here are some ways to clear pink eye:

  • For bacterial pink eye, your doctor may prescribe antibiotic eye drops or ointment. This can help speed up the healing process.
  • Mild bacterial pink eye may get better without antibiotic treatment. This usually takes 2 to 5 days but can take 2 weeks to go away completely.
  • Viral conjunctivitis doesn't need antibiotics and will often clear up on its own.
  • Home remedies can help relieve symptoms. These include:
    • Applying a cool compress to your eyes.
    • Using artificial tear drops to lubricate your eyes.
    • Taking over-the-counter pain relievers for discomfort.
    • Keeping your hands clean to prevent spreading the infection.
    • Avoiding contact with others to prevent spreading the infection.
  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water to prevent spreading the infection.
  • Avoid touching your eyes and be sure to wash your hands before and after putting in contact lenses.
  • Avoid sharing towels, washcloths, or eye makeup with others.

Note: If you have pink eye, see your doctor to get a diagnosis and discuss treatment options.
