How to Check Eye Pressure with Fingers?

Published in Eye Pressure Assessment 2 mins read

You cannot accurately check eye pressure with only your fingers. While a rudimentary comparison can be made to assess relative firmness between the two eyes, this method is unreliable for diagnosing conditions like glaucoma. This technique should never replace a proper eye exam by a healthcare professional.

However, if you're interested in a basic, comparative assessment of firmness, you can try the following steps:

A Very Basic Comparative Assessment (Not a Diagnostic Tool)

This method only provides a very rough comparison between the firmness of your eyes and should not be used for diagnosis. Always consult an ophthalmologist for accurate eye pressure measurement.

  1. Preparation: Ask the person to close their eyes and look down. This helps to relax the eye muscles.

  2. Palpation: Gently place the tips of both index fingers on the closed upper eyelid of one eye. Avoid pressing too hard.

  3. Assessment: Note the firmness. A healthy eye typically feels somewhat firm, like a ripe tomato – neither overly hard nor excessively soft. This is a subjective assessment.

  4. Comparison: Repeat steps 2 and 3 on the other eye. Compare the firmness felt in each eye. Any significant difference in firmness may warrant a visit to an eye doctor.

Important Note: A discrepancy in firmness detected using this method does not confirm any medical condition. It simply signals a need to consult an ophthalmologist for a proper intraocular pressure (IOP) measurement using professional tools like a tonometer. Accurate IOP measurement is crucial for detecting and managing glaucoma and other eye conditions.

Why Finger Palpation is Inadequate

Finger palpation is inherently subjective and lacks the precision needed for diagnosing eye pressure issues. It cannot quantify the pressure, and individual perception of firmness varies significantly. Professional tonometry provides objective, numerical measurements of IOP, making it the gold standard for eye pressure assessment.
