A zygomatic complex (ZMC) fracture involves the disarticulation and potential rotation of the zygomatic bone where it connects to other facial bones.
This fracture occurs when the zygomatic bone separates at several key points:
- Zygomaticofrontal suture: Located along the lateral orbital rim (the outer edge of the eye socket).
- Zygomaticomaxillary suture: Located medially (towards the middle of the face).
- Zygomatic arch: Extends along the cheekbone towards the temporal bone.
Because the zygoma connects to the frontal, sphenoid, temporal, and maxillary bones, a fracture of the ZMC impacts several areas of the face and orbit, often resulting in functional and aesthetic issues.
