What is a puffy skin?

Published in Facial Swelling 1 min read

"Puffy skin" is a common term for facial edema, which happens when fluid builds up in the tissues of your face. This can make your face look swollen or puffy, especially around the eyes. While the exact cause can be hard to pinpoint, it often occurs due to allergic reactions to things like pollen, latex, insect bites, food, water, and even sunlight.

Other potential causes of puffy skin include:

  • Angioedema: A condition that causes swelling of the deeper layers of skin.
  • Blood transfusion reaction: An allergic reaction to blood products.
  • Cellulitis: A bacterial infection of the skin.
  • Conjunctivitis: Inflammation of the conjunctiva, the membrane that lines the inside of your eyelids and covers the white part of your eye.
  • Injuries: Trauma to the face can cause swelling.
  • Infections: Infections can cause swelling in the face, such as sinusitis (infection of the sinuses).
  • Medications: Certain medications can cause facial swelling as a side effect.

Some common symptoms of puffy skin:

  • Swelling or puffiness of the skin.
  • Stretched and shiny skin.
  • Dark circles under the eyes.
  • Bags under the eyes.

If you experience facial swelling, it's important to see a doctor to determine the cause and receive appropriate treatment.
