How to Use a Wrist Band?

Published in Fitness Accessories 2 mins read

The method for using a wrist band depends on the type of wrist band and its intended purpose, but for wrist wraps used in weightlifting or gymnastics for support, the following instructions apply.

Here's a breakdown of how to use wrist wraps, also sometimes called wrist bands, particularly in athletic contexts:

  1. Identify the Loop (If Applicable): Some wrist wraps have a thumb loop. This loop helps you secure the wrap initially and control the tightness. If your wrap doesn't have a loop, proceed to step 3.
  2. Using the Thumb Loop (If Applicable): Place your thumb through the loop at the end of the wrap. This will position the wrap correctly on your wrist.
  3. Wrapping the Wrist: Begin wrapping the wrist, starting either above or below the wrist joint, depending on preference and the length of the wrap. Overlap each revolution slightly as you move up or down the wrist.
  4. Adjusting the Tightness: Control the tightness of the wrap as you go. A tighter wrap provides more support, but avoid restricting circulation. You should be able to comfortably make a fist. Experiment to find the right balance of support and comfort.
  5. Securing the End: Most wrist wraps have a Velcro closure at the end. Secure the Velcro firmly to keep the wrap in place. If there is no velcro and you are using cloth wraps, you may need to tuck the end in.
  6. Alternative use (without the loop): If you prefer a straight support band you can tuck the loop into the wrist wrap so that it is not used when wrapping.

When to Use Wrist Wraps:

  • Heavy Lifting: Use wrist wraps during exercises where you're lifting heavy weights (e.g., bench press, overhead press, squats).
  • Gymnastics/Rings: Use if you are using rings or activities that require wrist support.
  • Weak Wrists: If you have wrist issues or weakness, wraps can provide extra stability.

Important Considerations:

  • Don't over-tighten: Restricting blood flow can be dangerous and counterproductive.
  • Remove after use: Take the wraps off between sets or after your workout to allow normal circulation.
  • Clean Regularly: Wash your wrist wraps periodically to prevent odor and bacteria buildup.
