How is Protein Put into Powder?

Published in Food Processing 1 min read

Protein is converted into powder form through different processes depending on its source, be it plant-based or animal-based.

Plant-Based Protein Powder

Plant-based proteins, like those from pea or soy, undergo a two-phase process:

  • Dry Phase: The initial stage involves grinding the plant material into a very fine powder.
  • Liquid Phase: This phase focuses on separating the desired protein from unwanted components using a liquid medium.

Animal-Based Protein Powder

Animal-based proteins, such as whey, derived from milk, are processed as follows:

  • Heating: Milk is first heated to remove bacteria.
  • Straining: The milk is then strained to remove solids.
  • Enzyme Treatment: The remaining liquid undergoes enzyme treatment to isolate the protein.

Protein Source Process
Plant-based (Pea, Soy) Grinding & Separation
Animal-based (Whey) Heating, Straining & Enzyme Treatment

In both scenarios, the end goal is to extract, refine, and dry the protein into a fine powder that is then packaged for consumption.
