What is the Hindfoot?

Published in Foot Anatomy 1 min read

The hindfoot is the posterior (rear) section of the foot, located directly below the ankle joint.

In more detail, the hindfoot is the section of the foot that begins immediately below the ankle joint and extends to the Chopart joint (also known as the midtarsal joint). It is a crucial weight-bearing area, essential for walking, running, and maintaining balance.

The hindfoot comprises two bones:

  • Talus (or astragalus): This bone articulates with the tibia and fibula of the lower leg to form the ankle joint.
  • Calcaneus (or heel bone): This is the largest bone in the foot and forms the heel. It bears a significant amount of body weight.

The subtalar joint, formed by the articulation of the talus and calcaneus, allows for inversion and eversion movements of the foot, which are vital for adapting to uneven surfaces and maintaining stability.

Problems in the hindfoot can lead to conditions like:

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Heel spurs
  • Subtalar joint instability
  • Various forms of arthritis

Proper care and attention to the hindfoot are essential for overall foot health and mobility.
