How to Test for Flat Feet?

Published in Foot Health 2 mins read

A simple wet foot test can help you determine if you have flat feet.

The Wet Foot Test

This easy, at-home test will give you a good indication of whether or not you have flat feet:

  1. Wet Your Feet: Thoroughly wet the soles of your feet.

  2. Step on a Flat Surface: Immediately step onto a flat surface where your footprint will show. Good options include:

    • Bathroom tile
    • Concrete sidewalk
    • Any smooth surface that will clearly display your footprint
  3. Examine Your Footprint: Look at the imprint your wet foot left behind.

    • Normal Foot: If you have a normal arch, you will see a footprint that shows only the heel, the ball of your foot, and a connection between the two on the outside of your foot. There will be a gap, or void, between these two sections of the imprint.
    • Flat Foot: If your footprint shows almost the entire sole of your foot, meaning there's little to no curve or gap in the middle, then you likely have flat feet. This indicates that your arch is collapsing or not present.

Understanding Flat Feet

Flat feet, also known as pes planus or fallen arches, is a condition where the arch of the foot collapses, causing the entire sole of the foot to come into contact with the ground. This test provides a basic assessment.

Additional Considerations

While the wet foot test is a useful initial check, it’s important to know:

  • This test is a screening tool and isn't a substitute for a professional diagnosis.
  • If you have concerns about your feet, consult a podiatrist or healthcare professional for a comprehensive assessment.
  • Flat feet may not cause any problems for some people, but for others, it can lead to discomfort and pain.
