What is Foot Fissure?

Foot fissures, also known as cracks, are splits in the skin that develop on your feet. These fissures commonly appear on the heel, the ball of the foot, or between the toes. They can be unsightly and annoying when mild, but they can also become painful and prone to infection if left untreated.

Causes:

  • Dry skin: This is the most common cause of foot fissures, particularly during colder months when humidity is low.
  • Thickened skin: When the skin on your feet becomes too thick, it can crack and split, especially if it's also dry.
  • Excessive moisture: Though it might seem counterintuitive, too much moisture can also lead to foot fissures. The skin can soften and become more prone to cracking.
  • Certain medical conditions: Conditions like eczema, psoriasis, and diabetes can also contribute to foot fissures.
  • Improper footwear: Wearing shoes that are too tight or don't provide adequate support can increase pressure on the feet and lead to cracks.

Treatment:

  • Moisturize: Apply a thick moisturizer to your feet several times a day, especially after showering or bathing. Look for creams with ingredients like urea, lanolin, or hyaluronic acid.
  • Exfoliate: Gently remove dead skin with a pumice stone or foot scrubber to help the moisturizer penetrate deeper.
  • Soak your feet: Soak your feet in warm water for 10-15 minutes to soften the skin and make it easier to exfoliate.
  • Wear proper footwear: Opt for comfortable shoes that fit well and provide adequate support. Avoid wearing high heels or flip-flops for extended periods.
