How do you use dark chalk wax?

Published in Furniture Finishing 3 mins read

Dark chalk wax is used to create an aged or antique effect on painted furniture and other surfaces. Here's a step-by-step guide:

1. Prepare Your Surface:

  • Ensure your painted surface is dry and free of dust or debris. The paint should ideally be chalk paint for best results, but other matte paints can work too.

2. Apply Clear Chalk Paint® Wax (First Layer):

  • Using a wax brush or a lint-free cloth, apply a thin, even layer of clear chalk paint wax over the entire painted surface.
  • Work the wax into the paint, ensuring it absorbs. This layer acts as a sealant and helps control the intensity of the dark wax.

3. Apply Dark Chalk Paint® Wax:

  • Dip your wax brush (or use a clean lint-free cloth) into the dark wax.
  • Apply the dark wax liberally, rubbing it in every direction and pushing it into any brushstrokes, crevices, or texture in the painted surface. This is where the aging effect comes from.
  • Focus on areas where natural aging would occur, such as edges, corners, and details.

4. Remove Excess Dark Wax (Important!):

  • Using a clean lint-free cloth, wipe away the excess dark wax. You can control how much dark wax remains, therefore controlling the intensity of the aged look. Wipe in the direction of the wood grain (if applicable).
  • If you find the dark wax is too intense, use clear chalk paint wax on your cloth to help lift some of the dark wax. The clear wax acts as an eraser.

5. Buff for a Subtle Sheen:

  • After the dark wax has dried (usually within a few hours), buff the surface with a clean lint-free cloth to create a subtle sheen and enhance the finish.

Tips for Success:

  • Work in small sections: Apply and remove the dark wax in manageable areas to prevent it from drying too quickly.
  • Control the intensity: Apply multiple thin layers of dark wax for greater control over the final look.
  • Experiment: Practice on a scrap piece of painted material before applying dark wax to your furniture.
  • Use the right tools: A good-quality wax brush makes application easier and more even.
  • Safety: Wear gloves and work in a well-ventilated area when using wax products.

Troubleshooting:

  • Dark wax too dark? Apply clear wax to a cloth and wipe over the area to remove some of the dark wax.
  • Uneven application? Reapply dark wax and blend it in more carefully.
  • Sticky finish? You may have applied too much wax. Buff the surface thoroughly.

By following these steps, you can effectively use dark chalk wax to create a beautiful, aged finish on your painted projects.
